1940 - 1949

1940 

First publication of the Students’ Handbook.

AY 1940/1941 

Dr. Frederick Friedman is hired at Lambuth College through arrangements made with the Jewish Association for Displaced Persons – he is amazed at the freedom of speech in the United States in contrast with Nazi Germany.

1941 

The United States enter World War II; faculty and students leave campus to fight – senior male students are usually allowed to finish their academic year before having to report for duty. Simulations are run through campus so that faculty, students and staff can learn first aid - they are also trained on how to drive during potential blackouts; families are instructed to keep sand bags to put out fires in case of bombings.

1942 

The Lambuth College summer school resumes from June to August to help senior male students finish their studies quickly in case they are called to war; Lambuth College joins “Who’s Who in American Colleges."

By 1944 

Only 2 male students in Lambuth College senior class, 3 in junior, 3 in sophomore, 10 in freshmen; an Honor Roll is instituted to remember and honor those fighting.

1945 

The University Senate of the Methodist Church approves Lambuth College for the training of ministers; the Memphis Conference raises money to build a new campus library – sum to be matched by Lambuth College. Money is raised by the Memphis Conference to be matched by Lambuth College to build a Chapel to honor those who fought during WWII; need for a new gymnasium.

1946 

June and November Memphis Conference sessions – plans are made to organize a campaign to take care of Lambuth College financial needs; need for new women’s dormitory, the current one is full.

1947 

Construction begins for the Lambuth College Physical Education Building; the Federal Works Agency donates to the College a two-story barrack to house bookstore, student union, and music department.

1949 

The first beauty contest is held at Lambuth College.

February 1949 

The Ruth Marr Chapter of Future Teachers of America is founded at Lambuth College.
