"But it is something more; it is like Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone Park; it is a national playground, and not to have seen it is not to have seen your own country," said Reginald Wright Kauffman in 1909 of Coney Island, the tiny spit of land at the foot of Brooklyn that, at the turn of the century, became the most extravagant playground in the country and one of the most modern places on earth. In scale, in variety, in sheer inventiveness, Coney Island was unlike anything anyone had ever seen, and sooner or later, everyone came to see it. "Coney," one man said, "is the most bewilderingly up-to-date place of amusement in the world." On a single day in September 1906, 200,000 postcards were mailed from Coney Island.

Episode Seven examines the great African-American migration and Puerto Rican immigration of the '40s, '50s, and '60s; the beginnings of white flight and suburbanization; and the massive physical changes wrought by highways and urban renewal -- all of which were directed, to a surprising degree, by one man: Robert Moses. The film comes to a climax with the destruction of Penn Station, the battle over the Lower Manhattan Expressway, the social and fiscal crises of the '60s and '70s, and New York's miraculous revival in the last quarter-century.

Such raids were not unusual in the late 1960s, an era when homosexual sex was illegal in every state but Illinois. That night, however, the street erupted into violent protests and demonstrations that lasted for the next six days. The Stonewall riots, as they came to be known, marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.

The orchestra played daily at roll call, played marches, entertained the SS, and played when trains arrived delivering prisoners for the gas chambers, to help maintain calm in the camp. Their music resulted in their own survival - they had a job and an identity in the camp - but they experienced severe deprivations and suffering, and witnessed appalling atrocities. Surviving members of the orchestra recall their experiences, and some re-visit Auschwitz to confront their past. The story of the orchestra and the heroism of Alma Rose (who died aged 38 before the end of the war), emerges gradually from fragments of their memories. Michel Daeron's film is oral history at its best: simple, patient and respectful. This is no conventional TV-style history documentary: there are few archival images, no reconstructions, no narrator. The women themselves are the true subjects of the film - living today with their common past a constant presence in their lives.

The film tells the epic story of two families, one Northern and one Southern, during and after the Civil War. D.W. I hear the locomotives rushing and roaring... - Walt Whitman It had taken the bloodshed and sacrifice of the Civil War to reunite the nation, North and South. But when the war was over, Americans set out with equal determination to unite the nation, East and West. To do it, they would build a railroad. Its completion would be one of the greatest technological achievements of the age -- signalling at last, as nothing else ever had, that the United States was not only a continental nation, but on its way to becoming a world power. And when the railroad was finally built, the pace of change would shift from the steady gait of a team of oxen, to the powerful surge of a steam locomotive. The West would be transformed. Overnight, the railroad would turn barren spots of earth into raucous boom towns -- North Platte and Julesburg, Abilene, Bear River, Wichita and Dodge. The railroad would allow Civil War veterans, poor farmers from the East and landless peasants from Europe to have a farm they could call their own. The first three preschools are sites which we first filmed in 1984 for the original Preschool in Three Cultures Study. The other three are of preschools we selected for the new study to reflect new directions in each country's approach to early childhood education. In this study, the videos function primarily as interviewing tools. We call this approach "video cued multivocal ethnography" (or the Preschool in Three Cultures method). In this method, it is the responses of informants to these images, rather than the images themselves, that are the core data of the study and the primary source of meaning. By showing and discussing the videotapes with hundreds of preschool teachers and directors in each country, we were able to learn something about the variation to be found in each country's approach. The book Preschool in Three Cultures Revisited presents our analysis of teachers' reflections on their own and each others' cultural practices. The narration track of this video presents Chinese, Japanese, and U.S. teachers' reflections on key scenes in the videos. A disclaimer: clearly no one preschool can be representative of the preschools of an entire city much less of an entire country. We do not claim that the preschools in these videos are representative, except in the sense that they are not unrepresentative. Each is an example of just one of the many kinds of preschools to be found in its country.
