"In all eras, water transport has served as the cheapest and most efficient means of moving cargo and people over any significant distance. Only relatively recently have railroads and aircraft provided an alternative. Most of the world's bulk goods continue to travel primarily by ship over water. Even today, 95 percent of the cargo that enters and leaves the United States does so by ship. Similarly, people around the world rely on the sea for food, and in recent years, the sea has become an important source of oil and other resources, with the longterm effects of our continuing efforts to extract resources from the sea further highlighting environmental concerns that range from pollution to the exhaustion of fish stocks.
This chronologically organized two-volume reference addresses the history of the sea, beginning with ancient civilizations (4000 to 1000 BCE) and ending with the modern era (1945 to the present day). Outside of the familiar territory of the Western canon Hegel has also loomed large, most often as a villain, but sometimes also as a resource in struggles for liberation from colonialism, sexism and racism. Hegel understood his own work as aiming above freedom, yet ironically wrote texts that are not only explicitly Eurocentric and even racist. Should we, and is it even possible, to bring Hegelian texts and ideas into productive discourse with those he so often himself saw as distinctly Other and even inferior? In response to this question, this book brings together transdisciplinary scholars presenting various approaches to creolizing the work of Hegel. The essays in this volume take Hegelian texts and themes across borders of method, discipline, and tradition. The task is not simply to compare and contrast Hegel with some 'outsider' figure or tradition, but rather to reconsider and reconfigure our understandings of all of the figures and ideas brought together in these cross-disciplinary essays.

"Pidgeon-Thomas Iron Company served customers in Memphis and the Mid-South area from its three primary divisions: Structural Steel Fabrication and Erection, Steel Service Centers and Contractor and Industrial Supplies. Many consider Pidgeon-Thomas' industrial supply division to be the forerunner to "big box" hardware stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot. During World War II, Pidgeon-Thomas became a builder of warships for the military, providing 187 landing craft tank (LCT) used during the invasions of Normandy and Sicily. Its construction arm provided steel and built many notable structures throughout Memphis and the Mid-South region including the Orpheum Theatre, Mid South Coliseum, Hernando-Desoto (I- 40) Bridge, Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Bellevue Baptist Church, Shelby County Criminal Justice Center, as well as countless overpasses, bridges, factories, offices and public buildings. The book offers the reader a glimpse of how Philip Pidgeon, Sr., along with his sons Frank, Phil, Jr., James and nephew Eugene, built one of the largest and most successful steel industries in the Mid-South. While they were industry leaders, they were also leaders in their community and were heavily involved in promoting the City of Memphis. Frank C. Pidgeon was also an integral part of the development of Presidents Island and the Industrial Park located there that bears his name."

The work of considering, imagining, and theorizing the U.S. South in regional, national, and global contexts is an intellectual project that has been going on for some time. Scholars in history, literature, and other disciplines have developed an ad­vanced understanding of the historical, social, and cultural forces that have helped to shape the U.S. South. However, most of the debates on these subjects have taken place within specific academic disciplines, with few attempts to cross-engage. Navigating Souths broadens these exchanges by facilitating transdisciplinary conversations about southern studies scholarship. The fourteen original essays in Navigating Souths articulate questions about the significances of the South as a theoretical and literal ?home? base for social science and humanities researchers. They also examine challenges faced by researchers who identify as southern studies scholars, as well as by those who live and work in the regional South, and show how researchers have responded to these challenges. In doing so, this book project seeks to reframe the field of southern studies as it is currently being practiced by social science and humanities scholars and thus reshape historical and cultural conceptualizations of the region.
