Course Objectives
- The overall goal of this course is to develop health care skills in Spanish while developing an awareness and appreciation for Latinx culture. By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Students will be able to describe and follow roles, standards of practice and code of ethics of a medical interpreter by completing quizzes on the topic.
- After completing the section on advocacy, students will be able to apply a decision-making protocol for advocacy to medical interpreting in various activities.
- Given CoreCHI™ Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter™ and CHI™ Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ information, students will be able to identify what is required to take the exam and the difference among them .
- Communicate in Spanish about healthcare topics about the Latinx community by completing dialogues.
- Apply interpreter strategies practiced in class to interpret common clinical encounters by completing dialogues.
- Develop an awareness about the healthcare system in the US and abroad.
- Given specialized medical terminology, students will recognize translation for that terminology in a medical context and the meaning in the first language as well.
Course Information

- Given an alumni, external collaborator, community, partner or graduate student, students will synthesize a short paragraph about the person they interviewed in 500 words or less.

- Students must have 3-3000 level Spanish courses
Course Topics
Class is set up in getting started, Pre-Modules A and B, and 12 Modules. Each Pre-Module and Modules clearly indicates what your requirements are, as well as instructions. There are 2 Pre-modules and 12 Modules, that you will need to complete during the semester. Inside them you will find the assignments.
Specific Course Requirements
In order to be successful in this course, you will need to make sure that you can access eCourseware and that you have the appropriate tools to work within these sites. This will require:
- Access to a computer.
- Access to a camera to be able to record yourself for certain activities. Remember that most computers and phones have cameras.
- Access to multiple browsers. You need to have access to multiple browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari et cetera).
- Access to a reliable, high-speed Internet connection (DSL or Cable).
- Test your device to ensure it is compatible with our LMS (Learning Management System) using the System Check Wizard
- Open PDF files using the free downloadable PDF software.
- Access Flash-based content with Adobe Flash Player (free).
- Use Microsoft Office for document creation (available for students via umapps.memphis.edu).
- Play media content with Real Player (free), QuickTime (free), or Windows Media Player (free).

Besides introducing yourself video in discussions, there are 3 participation assignments within this category. Participation and collaboration are very important when taking online classes. Thus, it is very important for you to make at least 2 posts for each one of the Participation items in General Discussions. The postings can be either in English or Spanish.
PRESENTATION 20%
Students will post a presentation on VideoNote. Detailed instructions /guidelines are under content.
ACTIVITIES/TO DO LIST 20% Will take on various formats, including written and oral practice. It includes the creation of medical dialogues. Guidelines under content.
QUIZZES 20%
Check weekly assignments under each pre-module and module.
