Searching Grove Online to find works in monuments

Monuments, or critical editions, are the most trusted editions of a composer's works. Finding individual pieces of music in them can be a challenge, especially with composers who were prolific in output. The following steps guide you through the process:

1) The first step in using Grove to find a work in a critical edition is to search for the composer. Each composer entry has a list of "article contents" on the left side of the page:

 


2) By clicking Works toward the bottom left, a list of critical editions of works by that composer is brought up. For example:

 


3) Below that, a list of individual works shows in which edition, volume, and page number the work can be found:

 

Online editions

For example, the Mozart edition available online is the same edition as what is physically in the Music Library.
